Let’s Get Creative about the Economy


Bernalillo County’s Economic Development Department announced a new component of its “Increment of One” initiative, focusing on the county’s artists. Running through mid-September, Bernalillo County is working with the non-profit Museum of New Mexico Foundation Shops to help local artists find new markets for their works and build the “creative economy.”

After careful consideration, County Manager Thaddeus Lucero has appointed Renetta Torres as Deputy County Manager for the Administrative Services Division. Ms. Torres has 31 years of management experience, a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a Masters Degree. She will be responsible for the Economic Development, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Public Information departments effective Sunday, August 1, 2010.

NM Gas Co. to Upgrade to Automated Meter Reading

This month, New Mexico Gas Company will begin upgrading the natural gas meters throughout the Albuquerque Metro and Santa Fe areas with the latest meter reading technology.  The state-of-the-art computerized technology will enable gas meters to be read automatically using a small, battery-operated device installed on the meter.

Sheriff Works with Metropolitan Detention Center to Reduce Crime

Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales indicated that, "Deputies are spending too much time at MDC and less time on patrol." Within the next 30 to 60 days, the Sheriff will place two skilled investigators, not currently on patrol, at the jail.

Deputy County Manager for Public Safety, John Dantis, announced his intent to retire yesterday. In a letter to County Manager Thaddeus Lucero he stated, “It is now necessary, due to personal and medical reasons, that I announce my retirement effective July 30, 2010. This is the time for me to focus on family and personal challenges.”

Two Day Closure of Ranchitos Road

Ranchitos Rd will be closed between 2nd St and Edith Blvd, starting at 6 pm on Saturday, June 26th thru Sunday, June 27th.  Ranchitos will re-open the evening of the 27th. The closure will allow Herzog to replace the Railroad Crossing between Edith and 2nd. 

A detour route will be available from 2nd St, to Los Ranchos Rd, to Edith Blvd.

Emergency Closure of Sunset Road

There has been an emergency closure of the 1200 block of Sunset Road SW, between Bowe Lane and Gatewood Avenue, for the afternoon.  The road closure is necessary because New Mexico Gas Company crews are repairing a gas main.
 
The detour for the Sunset Road closure runs from Yakima Road, to Goff Boulevard, to Bowe Lane.
 
NMGCo expects to reopen Sunset Road by early evening.

Rio Fire in Jemez NM

Bernalillo County Fire Department as per the JPA/RMP with the State has deployed 4 units to the Rio Fire in Jemez (2-Type 3 Tenders,1 Type 3 Engine and 1 Rescue) to support the firefighting efforts. As of right now the Fire is continuing to grow in size to approximately 1400 acres and threatening structures in its path.

Prince Street Closed Thursday, May 27th

Prince St., south of Rio Bravo, will be closed on Thursday 5/27/2010 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  The closure will be at 4411 Prince, south of Rencher Ave.  The TLC company will be doing a sewer tie in at the location, and due to the depth and location of the sewer main, Prince will need to be completely closed at the excavation.
 
Thru traffic from Prince to Prosperity will be detoured from Prince St. to Grape, from Grape to Williams, and from Williams to Prince.  Local traffic will have full access on either side of the closure.

Commission Vice-Chair Maggie Hart Stebbins has asked the County Manager to begin reviewing the current Rules and Regulations, Policies and Procedures and Administrative Instructions that relate to employees. 
 
“I have asked for this review so we can determine whether our personnel policies meet the ‘best practice’ standard. They need to be clear and consistent, county-wide, so that all job applicants are treated fairly and all County employees are treated equally,” says Commissioner Hart Stebbins.

Raymac Road Lane Closure

Raymac Road will have a lane closure starting Tuesday 5/4/2010 and ending Saturday 5/8/2010, due to a partial road collapse at the Arenal Lateral.  Raymac Road is being undermined by a leaking culvert at the ditch, and the entire culvert across Raymac must be repaired.  Emergency work is already underway by Meridian Engineering. 

One lane will remain open in each direction, and traffic will be flagged thru the work zone.  To avoid the lane closure, traffic can detour from Coors Blvd, to Pajarito Rd, to Isleta Blvd.

Bernalillo County Assessor Karen Montoya has mailed approximately 212,000 notices of value to property owners.  
If you do not receive your Notice of Value in a reasonable time, please call the Assessor's Office at 222-3700. 
 If a property owner disagrees with the assessed valuation on the Notice of Value, they can file a protest with the Assessor’s Office by May 20, 2010.

    Bernalillo County Commission Chairman Art De La Cruz will address some one thousand UNM student and faculty volunteers at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the campus’ Johnson Center in the south gym to thank them in advance for the 36 yards and homes they plan to clean for elderly and infirm South Valley residents and war veterans tomorrow.

    The huge volunteer effort, sponsored by UNM’s student association, ASUNM, is called “Spring Storm” and is the group’s largest community service project of the year.

    Commissioner Hart Stebbins Announces Second New Initiative as a Result of Increment of One

    Bernalillo County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins is pleased to announce a new initiative for small businesses as part of the Increment of One initiative that included a small business listening tour and a summit that was held in February, 2010.

    One of their main concerns was access to government procurement. As a result, Bernalillo County’s Economic Development Department and Purchasing Department have worked together to make it easier for small businesses to provide goods and services to Bernalillo County.

    Commissioner Hart Stebbins Announces Second New Initiative as a Result of Increment of One

    County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins will unveil the second initiative that comes as a result of the Increment of One Summit, held in February, 2010.
     
    “The Summit was extremely successful,” says Commissioner Hart Stebbins. “There were hundreds of small business owners who attended to talk to us directly about their priorities and needs, one of which is easier access to government procurement opportunities.”

    County To Hold Public Budget Hearings

    In an effort to gather public input, Bernalillo County officials will be hosting a series of public budget hearings beginning on April 5, 2010 through April 6, 2010.

    “We agree that the budget should be transparent to the general public and we would like residents to have a better understanding of the process and how their tax dollars are spent.” says Commission Chair Art De La Cruz.

    Bernalillo County Assessor’s Office to Release Notice of Values

    Bernalillo County Assessor Karen Montoya has announced that Notices of Values for the following assessments will be mailed out to taxpayers.

    Notice of Values for Agricultural/Livestock, Business Personal Property and Mobile Homes will be mailed out on March 31, 2010. The protest period for these assessments will be from April 1, 2010 to April 30, 2010.

    FEMA to Revise Floodplain Zones in South Valley

    The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has agreed to issue the interim Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) for the Albuquerque West Levee Overbank Area. This will remove over half (approximately 1,041) of the affected properties from the Special Flood Hazard Area, Zone A restoring them to Zone X, which is protected by the levee.

    Medical Observation and Treatment Unit is Now Open

    On December 14, 2009, the Medical Observation and Treatment Unit, better known as MOTU, opened for operations at 5901 Zuni SE. This facility provides 24/7 treatment for individuals that need to Detox from alcohol consumption while being medically monitored. 
     
    This project was conceived in an effort to decompress hospital emergency rooms of chronic public inebriates.   This is a two year pilot project funded by Presbyterian, UNM, Lovelace hospitals along with Bernalillo County.

    Mid-Region Council of Governments Survey

    Long Time Former Bernalillo County Manager and Treasurer Passes Away

    Former Bernalillo County Manager and Treasurer Alex Abeyta, Jr. passed away this morning in Albuquerque. He was 76. Mr. Abeyta served for nine years as County Manager between 1979 and 1991, for nearly three years as Deputy County Treasurer, and for four years as County Treasurer. He also served on Governor Bill Richardson’s Commission on Disability.

    Manuel Gonzales III Sworn In as New Sheriff

     



    20-year Sheriff's Department veteran, Manuel Gonzales III, was sworn in Monday night to fill the unexpired term of former Sheriff Darren White.

    Sheriff Gonzales worked in several areas of the Sheriff's Department, including the regional academy, information technology, firearms range management and budget oversight. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Management with a specialization in Law Enforcement and an Associate's degree in Criminal Justice. He also completed the highly recognized program,  Police Staff and Command from Northwestern University Center of Public Safety.
