8/12/2009 Public Information and IT Departments Receive Top Ten Digital Award
Bernalillo County’s official website, has been named one of 2009’s top ten County websites in the U.S. according to the prestigious Center for Digital Government, headquartered in Folsom, California. It is the County’s third, top ten designation since the contest began seven years ago. Bernalillo County shares this year’s sixth place honors with Orange County, Florida and Westchester County, New York—all of which serve populations of 500,000 or greater. In 2004, Bernalillo County’s website placed fourth in the competition and in 2003, it placed seventh. Hundreds of counties are considered for top ten honors each year.
“The Center for Digital Government has found that America’s counties are embracing new technologies to involve citizens, are moving toward transparent government and are increasing green and sustainable measures while continuing to improve online services,” says Bernalillo County Manager Thaddeus Lucero. “Our website started as a weekend project during County Government Week in 1996 by two County employees and has evolved into one of New Mexico’s premiere digital destinations. There are nearly 15 million visits to our website each month. We post thousands of pages of valuable information to our community online. And we are currently working on a redesign that will provide an even better resource for a better understanding of Bernalillo County’s programs and services.”

The top digital counties were honored at a conference which coincided with the National Association of Counties’ national conference in Nashville on July 24-28. |
