Bernalillo County’s IT Department Wins Prestigious Hewlett Packard Award
Bernalillo County has received another award for upgrading its computer system to provide faster and more comprehensive service to millions of its web browsers each month.

Bernalillo County Manager Thaddeus Lucero says the Hewlett Packard’s 2009 Itanium Innovation Award in the Data Center Modernization Category followed months of planning and high tech change-overs that consolidated dozens of former County servers the County’s former system into one streamlined application that cost approximately $750,000. Over time, he adds, the upgrade will save County taxpayers more than $2.2 million, reduce maintenance, and improve productivity.

“The County was running dozens of servers, each of which was responsible for a small task in relation to the servers ability; such as a GIS application for monitoring fueling for the public works department, or a front-end interface to Oracle databases used by the police department for checking on outstanding warrants. The servers were underutilized, using less than 5% of the central processing unit at any given time. In addition to being a huge source of unnecessary power consumption, these units had reached the end of their life cycles,” Manager Lucero says. “Having to run and maintain dozens of servers is a well known IT budgetary nightmare. Bernalillo County's infrastructure created monetary drains in support and maintenance as well as power. By looking at the solution HP proposed, we had the potential to see a significant return on our investment.”

The awards ceremony was heldat the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as part of the 2009 Intel Developers Forum on
September 23.
