The Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center is conducting a series of Cultural Awareness Trainings for all employees over the next several weeks.
“The MDC is making a concerted effort to ensure that all our staff is aware of cultural differences, especially in light of the conditions that are present in all mega detention facilities,” says Ron Torres, Chief of Corrections.
The training will focus on improving the correctional officers understanding of cultural diversity, as well as increasing the cultural awareness of the institution and its programs that serve diverse population. Workshops will be presented on managing diversity, cultural differences, and the advantages and benefits of diversity, with data from case studies.
“It is imperative that the MDC continue to provide training on an ongoing basis for the purpose of establishing operational consistency with the officers in their interactions with all inmates,” says Chief Torres.
The cultural awareness Initiative is a key component of MDCs strategic plan. MDC’s mission is to protect the public and provide a safe and secure environment for both staff and inmates under the principles of direct supervision and in accordance with the American Correctional Association (ACA) standards. Part of this mission includes providing the staff with the necessary training to continue and uphold the MDC’s mission.
