After over a half century of fire and rescue service, former Bernalillo County Dist. 5 Fire Chief, Clark “Sparkie” Speakman died on July 11, 2010.
Mr. Speakman served Bernalillo County as a Communications Supervisor, a volunteer firefighter and Fire Chief of Dist. 5 for a total of 47 years. After that, Clark was the Sandoval County Fire Marshal for 13 years and retired in 2005. He was active throughout the state for 54 years as:
· An instructor/founding member of the UNM School of Medicine EMT program
· Board of Director for NMIAAI,
· Member of the Governor’s New Mexico Fire Planning Task Force,
· Board of Directors member of EMIFPA
· International Association of Fire Chiefs SW Division
· TVI (CNM) Advisory Committee for Fire Science
· Member of the Greater Jemez Corridor Wildland Urban Interface Organization,
· Adjunct Instructor for the NM Fire Fighters Training Academy in Socorro.
· A founding member of the ACRA Emergency Net a search and rescue organization that later was taken over by SAR of NM.
Services will be held Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 1:00 pm at Legacy Church, 7201 Central Ave., NW. Fire personnel from around the state will be on hand for the services and to join in a procession from Legacy Church to BCFD Fire Station 5. The procession will begin at Central Ave. west to Unser, north on Unser to Paseo del Norte, then east to Station 5 at Lowell and Paseo del Norte. There are at least 35 fire apparatus expected to take part in the procession.
